Thiem retires injured from Wimbledon warmup event in Mallorca

World number five Dominic Thiem was forced to retire from his opening match at the Mallorca Open on Tuesday (June 22), raising doubts about the Austrian's participation at Wimbledon next week.

Playing in his first grasscourt event since his opening round defeat at Wimbledon two years ago, Thiem made a fast start against France's Adrian Mannarino to take a 5-2 lead in the opening set. But in the eighth game, Thiem struck a forehand and appeared to injure his right wrist. After receiving a medical timeout, the 27-year-old decided against continuing the match.

* Former Lille owner Gerard Lopez has reached an agreement to rescue French side Girondins de Bordeaux from going bust, the Ligue 1 side said on Tuesday. Bordeaux were placed into administration in April after their owners, investment management firm King Street Capital Management, decided they could no longer support the club financially.

* Scotland were not good enough to progress in their first major tournament in 23 years but will make sure they don't wait as long for the next one, manager Steve Clarke said after his side's exit from Euro 2020 on Tuesday. A 3-1 defeat by 2018 World Cup runners-up Croatia at Hampden Park left the Scots last in Group D and yet to reach the knockout stages of a European championship or World Cup in 11 attempts.

* Sweden might be through to the Euro 2020 knockout stages but coach Janne Andersson says his side will still be going for the win in their final game against Poland to secure extra days off before their last-16 match. The Swedes top Group E on four points, with Slovakia second on three, Spain third with two and Poland bottom on one.

* Spain may have flattered to deceive at Euro 2020, but coach Luis Enrique says he is a born optimist and believes "champagne" football is about to flow against Slovakia on Wednesday. The three-times European champions were unable to break down an ultra-defensive Sweden in a goalless draw in their opening game and could only draw 1-1 with Poland, meaning they have to beat Slovakia to ensure passage to the last 16.

* It was 35 years ago today that Diego Maradona taught England to play, and the date did not go unnoticed in Argentina, where his compatriots remembered his “goal of the century” with a nationwide celebration of cheers and applause. To remember the feat, Argentines took to their windows, balconies, and gardens to shout "Gooooooooool!" at precisely 16:09, the exact moment the ball hit the net at the Aztec Stadium on June 22, 1986.

* With 30 days to go until the start of an Olympic Games dogged by the coronavirus pandemic and by controversy, Tokyo Olympics President Seiko Hashimoto on Tuesday defended the organisers' decision to allow spectators into Olympic venues. Organisers said on Monday up to 10,000 domestic spectators would be allowed into venues. Foreign visitors are banned.

* Ukrainian Dayana Yastremska's provisional doping suspension has been lifted with immediate effect as there was no fault or negligence on her part, an independent tribunal under the Tennis Anti-Doping Programme said on Tuesday.

* Oregon's new athletics stadium, due to host of the 2022 world championships, will be the venue for the 2023 Diamond League final, making it the first time the meeting has been held outside Europe, the league's top official told Reuters on Tuesday.

* Inter Milan have signed Turkey international Hakan Calhanoglu on a free transfer from city rivals AC Milan, the Italian Serie A champions announced on Tuesday. The 27-year-old midfielder signed a three-year deal with Inter after helping Milan finish second in Serie A and securing Champions League football after a gap of seven years.

* Belgium have split this week’s training into two parts to mitigate for not knowing the identity of their next opponents at Euro 2020, coach Roberto Martinez said on Tuesday. Belgium confirmed top place in Group B on Monday with a 2-0 win over Finland and next play in the last 16 in Sevilla on Sunday, but they will only discover who they face once the group phase is concluded on Wednesday.

* France are eager to use their final Group F match against Portugal in Budapest on Wednesday to boost their confidence before they advance to the knockout stage of the European championship, goalkeeper Hugo Lloris said. France, who lost to Portugal in the Euro 2016 final, are already through to the last 16 and will finish first in the group if they win, or if they draw and Germany fail to beat Hungary in the group's other match on Wednesday.

* Borys Tashchy and Lim Sang-hyub were on target as three-times continental champions Pohang Steelers kicked off their 2021 Asian Champions League campaign with a 2-0 win over Thailand's Ratchburi in Bangkok on Tuesday.

* Barcelona and France forward Ousmane Dembele's nightmarish luck with injuries continued on Tuesday as his club announced he will need surgery to treat the knee problem which forced him out of the European Championship. Dembele was forced off the pitch in France's 1-1 draw with Hungary on Saturday only 30 minutes after coming on, and the national team on Monday ruled him out for the rest of the tournament.

* Crowd capacity at Wembley Stadium will be increased to more than 60,000 fans for the semi-finals and final of Euro 2020, the British government said on Tuesday. The new levels mean the stadium will be at 75% capacity for the final three games, which conclude with the final itself on July 11.

* Formula One has extended a partnership with sports merchandise retailer Fanatics after a US-led surge in sales, the Liberty Media-owned sport said on Tuesday. Formula One said sales on its official online store had grown 40% globally in 2020.

* Alcoholic beverages will be banned at the Olympics, Tokyo 2020 President Seiko Hashimoto said on Wednesday, adding that the decision was made in the interest of removing the public's concern over a "safe and secure" Games.

* Li Tie will continue to lead China's national team after steering his side into the final round of Asia's preliminaries for the 2022 World Cup, the president of the Chinese Football Association confirmed on Tuesday. The former Everton midfielder, who took over as head coach following Marcello Lippi's resignation, led the Chinese to four straight wins this month to secure a berth in the next round of qualifying for Qatar.
