Swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang became the first Vietnamese athlete to qualify for the Tokyo 2020 Games after meeting the Olympic Qualifying Time (OQT) at the 18th FINA World Championships 2019 in the Republic of Korea.
Hoang finished the 800m freestyle race in 07:52.74, surpassing the OQT of 7:54.31.
Later in the same year, Hoang continued to meet Olympic A standard in the 1,500m freestyle event, clocking a time of 14:58.14 at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines.

On October 6, 2019, Le Thanh Tung reached the men’s vault finals at the 49th FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in Stuttgart, Germany after finishing fifth in the qualification with a score of 14.633.
According to the provisions of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG), in order to qualify for the Olympic Games, contestants must be among the Top 3 of each category.
However, five of the eight finalists had won tickets to Tokyo 2020 in the team events; therefore, the Vietnamese gymnast automatically got an Olympics berth prior to the finals.

On November 28, 2019, Do Thi Anh Nguyet outplayed teammate Loc Thi Dao 6-4 in the women’s recurve quarterfinals at the Asian Archery Championships in Thailand, but missed out on a final berth following her 2-6 semifinal defeat against Indian top seed Kumari Deepika.
However, the Vietnamese archer had the reason to rejoice as she then won the third-place playoff match, thus qualifying for an Olympic quota place, which was awarded to the top three athletes from different countries in each event.

Nguyen Van Duong became the first Vietnamese boxer to secure an official Olympic place in 32 years after knocking down his Thai opponent Chatchai-decha Butdee at the Asia/Oceania Olympic boxing qualifying tournament in Amman, Jordan in March 2020.
Such a brilliant result earned the 1999-born archer an official ticket to the Tokyo 2020 Games.
As soon as the match started, the Vietnamese athlete threw powerful left hooks and made his Thai rival dizzy. After nearly 60 seconds, the referee ruled Duong to be the victor, as Chatchai-decha Butdee had been floored twice.

Two Olympic slots were supposed to be awarded via the 2021 Asian Artistic Gymnastics Championships set for May 2021 in China, excluding the already-qualified athletes or those coming from countries which have attained sufficient berths.
However, with the tournament having been cancelled due to COVID-19, the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) decided to grant these slots to Asian athletes with high results in the all-around qualification at the 2019 FIG Artistic Gymnastics World Championships.
Two years ago, Dinh Phuong Thanh settled for 75th position in the all-around qualification at the world championship with 77.465 points from the six disciplines of freestyle, vault, pommel horse, ring, parallel bars and horizontal bar.
Meanwhile, Le Thanh Tung, another Vietnamese gymnast, ranked 59th with 78.832 points. Yet, with Tung having secured an Olympic ticket thanks to his fifth-place finish in the vault qualification, the two remaining all-around Olympic slots were awarded to Dinh Phuong Thanh and another Asian representative.

Earlier on May 28, the International Testing Agency (ITA) proposed the IWF impose sanctions on Vietnam as the country had four doping cases, all for steroids, during the Olympic qualifying period. After two weeks of consideration, the IWF decided not to ban Vietnamese weightlifting from the Tokyo 2020 Games, which means that the athletes who have met standards will be eligible to compete in the world’s largest multi-sport event.
This is the second consecutive time Thach Kim Tuan has booked his place in the Olympic arena.

Lan was nominated by the Vietnam Athletics Federation for the country’s only Olympic place in track and field, awarded to a nation that fails to secure an official berth. Top Vietnamese shooter Hoang Xuan Vinh, who is the reigning Olympic champion in the men’s 10m air pistol event, has been chosen to represent the country at the Tokyo 2020 Games.
Vinh, 47, takes the honour after the International Olympic Committee (IOC) offered an Olympic ticket for Vietnam in the category, asking the Vietnam Shooting Federation to send an outstanding or well-known marksman to the Games.
Vinh is the oldest among the total 18 Vietnamese Olympians at Tokyo 2020.

The International Judo Federation on July 3 confirmed that judoka Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy will represent Vietnam at the Tokyo Olympics, competing in the women’s -52kg category.
Olympic qualification in judo for Tokyo 2020 is dictated by the Olympic Game Quota (OGQ) Rankings, which is based on performance over the past 24 months. The top 18 athletes in every weight division on the OGQ rankings earn a direct qualification to Tokyo 2020. However, only one athlete per country is allowed for each category.
Furthermore, continental quotas are also made available to every regional body and distributed among the weight divisions, with Asia receiving 10 for men and women. The 26-year-old Vietnamese was promoted to clinch one of these continental quotas, replacing Yu Sun Jon (Democratic People’s Republic of Korea) who had withdrawn.

Vietnam’s top female swimmer Nguyen Thi Anh Vien has been included in the list of athletes competing in the 2020 Tokyo Olympics after receiving an invitation from the International Swimming Federation (FINA).
A letter from the FINA was delivered to the Vietnam Aquatic Sports Association (VASA) on the morning of July 2 about the case of Anh Vien. Specifically, the Vietnamese swimming ace will compete in the women’s 200m and 800m freestyle events at the Tokyo Games. According to FIFA regulations, each nation with an athlete meeting Olympic A standard is awarded an Olympic slot for another athlete of the opposite sex.
Earlier, top male swimmer Nguyen Huy Hoang qualified for the Games with the A standard in the men’s 800m and 1,500m freestyle. Therefore, Anh Vien has been granted a ticket to Tokyo as she has satisfied many of the B standards in the qualification campaign.
This is the third consecutive time the Can Tho-born swimmer has qualified for the world’s largest multisport event.
