Following a conference held at Big C Thang Long supermarket in Hanoi yesterday afternoon, Big C Vietnam – a member of Central Group Vietnam – granted the cooperatives approval to provide their agricultural products to the Big C supermarket system.

This is the first time the event has been organised, creating opportunities for concerned parties, including State management agencies, retail distributors and agricultural cooperatives to discuss policies and mechanisms related to cooperative, as well as sharing experience on product consumption through the Big C Vietnam system by several agricultural cooperatives.

A representative from Big C Vietnam said that the system has witnessed changes in consumption trends by modern customers over recent years, which could be noted out as orientations for cooperatives to develop and plan their production in the future.

Accordingly, products should be traceable, meeting both national and international standards, as well having packaging and labels standardised according to the State's label standards. Customers also favour local specialties and seasonal products, with domestic agricultural products beginning to overwhelm imported ones.

In 2018, Big C’s weekly programmes promoting local agricultural products, such as chayote from Nghe An province, Cao Phong orange from Hoa Binh province, and Hai Duong province’s carrots, have achieved impressive consumer sales, up to hundreds of tonnes per programme.

Consumers have expressed their interest and trust in agricultural products with clear origin. In particular, through the traceability stamps on the products, they can use their cell phones to scan the traceable codes and understand the origin information.

In addition, standard certifications such as VietGap or GlobalGap also generate huge competitiveness for production facilities, contributing to boosting the consumption of agricultural products.

Big C is ready to coordinate with the relevant agencies to assist enterprises, cooperatives and farmers in penetrating modern distribution systems, thereby better understanding the requirements of customers and adjusting production to best suit current consumption trends, said the Big C Vietnam representative.
