Higher education costs drive Hanoi’s September CPI

Nhan Dan Online - Hanoi’s consumer prices in September rose a marked 0.51% compared with the 0.19% rise in the previous month, which was mainly boosted by increases in education costs.

The municipal statistical office said education costs were up 8.55% against August as colleges and universities raised their tuition fees and as spending on stationery items for a new school year picked up.

The office said consumer prices in Hanoi were up 3.26% against the same month last year.

Food costs and restaurant service as a single group rose 0.31% and home appliances were up 0.45% over August. Telecommunications costs were flat during the month.

In September, utility bills and transport costs dropped by 0.91% and 1.96% against the previous month as a result of recent cuts in gas and petrol prices

Over the past 30 days, fuel prices have been slashed three times.

The prices of gold and US dollars fell by 1.65% and 0.09% respectively compared with August.

Similarly, consumer prices in Ho Chi Minh City shot up 1.13% because of spikes in education costs, which were 19.02% higher than the previous month.

Meanwhile the majority of goods in the basket used to calculate CPI was down compared with August.

Food costs and restaurant services declined by 0.2% due to weak demand. Lower fuel prices pushed transport costs in Vietnam’s largest city down by 2.03%.
