NDO—The Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board and a joint venture of Alstom Transport S.A.–Colas rail S.A.–Thales Communication & Security S.A.S., comprised of leading French companies in the field of urban railway development have signed a contract to invest in railway equipment for the capital city’s first metro rail system.

Accordingly, the contract is worth over VND7.6 trillion (US$334.4 million) and is funded by the French Government with an execution time of 47 months.

The investment will be poured in the CP06 package, which includes six components to facilitate the metro system’s Line 3 connecting Nhon in Nam Tu Liem District with Hanoi Railway Station in Hoan Kiem District.

Of the money, nearly VND3 trillion will be invested in consulting, designing, producing and installing equipment for ten trains with four carriages each capable of carrying about 900 passengers at a maximum speed of 80kph. In addition, the package also covers other support items, such as the depot area, input devices, a ticket system and power supply.

Speaking at the signing ceremony, Chairman of the Hanoi municipal People’s Committee Nguyen Duc Chung said that Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station project was one of the city’s key transport projects. The whole metro line, once completed, would help tackle congestion and reduce the pressure on the transport system in Hanoi, he stressed.

The Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station section under the Hanoi metro line has a length of 12.5km.

The Hanoi leader also added that with the assistance of the French Government and the project management board, the schedule has been accelerated, affirming the prestige of French contractors in Hanoi and across the whole country, Chung said.

He also urged Hanoi Metropolitan Railway Management Board to strengthen management over the project to ensure its progress. Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh and Dong Da Districts, which will have metro lines running across them, need to complete land clearance for the project soon, while contractors should ensure quality and safety while carrying out their duties, Chung said.

The Nhon-Hanoi Railway Station line is to have a length of 12.5km, with 8.5km running overhead and 4km underground, consisting of eight elevated stations, four underground stations and one depot area in Nhon.

The whole metro system has total of eight lines and one sub-branch. Construction for the project was started in September 2010 and the first line—Line 2A from Cat Linh to Ha Dong—is expected to open next September. However, for many reasons, completion is likely to be set by 2021. So far, a total investment of nearly VND36 trillion has been poured into the project.
