Speaking at the working session, the US Consul General in Ho Chi Minh City Mary Tarnowka appreciated the potential and position of Can Tho city as a centre of the Mekong River Delta.

She said that the US wishes to expand trade with the city in agriculture, creating favourable conditions for local enterprises to grasp more opportunities to export their products to the American market.

The US Consulate General in Vietnam will actively support Can Tho and other Mekong River Delta provinces to connect with the Sustainable Agriculture Programme of the US.

In terms of healthcare, the US Embassy in Vietnam will talk with the US Department of Health and Human Services, discussing the appointment of working delegations from prestigious hospitals, research centres and medical universities in the US to share their experience and knowledge at Can Tho’s hospitals and medical facilities.

The US representative also proposed the cooperation in education and training through the exchanges of students, postgraduates and lecturers.

The US Consulate General is willing to sponsor and support Can Tho in developing a smart urban project, added Tarnowka.

In addition, the American side proposed a plan for its cooperation with Can Tho to implement the projects for clean air, reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, drainage and wastewater treatment management in order to increase the city's resilience towards climate change.

For his part, Chairman of Can Tho City People's Committee Le Quang Manh agreed with the plans and proposals of the US Consulate General.

He also affirmed that the cooperation with the US is one of the main focuses in its strategy towards investment attraction and sustainable development of the city in particular and the Mekong River Delta region in general.
