The project on “cultivation measures to improve the quality of soil for sustainable rice production in the Mekong River Delta region” (Susrice) is a Belgian-funded research cooperation programme that has been implemented in Tra On district, Vinh Long province since 2017.
The project aims to improve soil quality and rice yield through the introduction of crop rotation (maize, green beans) and organic fertilisers.
In order to restore soil fertility in the Mekong River Delta, Can Tho University has closely coordinated with Ghent University (in Belgium) to research models focusing on crop rotation instead of rice monoculture and the use of organic fertilisers.
The research results have shown the positive effect of the rotation of rice and other crops in association with organic fertilisers to increase rice yield, soil quality and the efficient use of water as well as bringing higher incomes for farmers.
The seminar was also an opportunity to transfer research results on techniques for practical application to farmers and local agricultural workers.
