Deputy PM Hai, who heads the State Steering Committee on Key Transport Projects, urged contractors to mobilise workers and optimise the application of machinery and equipment to maintain the established construction timetable.

He asked site clearance committees to work with communes and districts crossed by the highway in order to address site-related issues.

The government official commented on the contractors’ designs, construction and finances, asking relevant agencies to handle the adjustment of materials’ prices and financial planning.

The 245km-long Hanoi-Lao Cai Highway is a key northern transport project with a total investment of US$1.25 billion. The road is scheduled to become operational by the end of 2013.

However, just 145 km of the lower foundation and 90 km of the upper foundation have been completed. The plastic concrete coverage has been completed on a 65km stretch near Hanoi and Vinh Phuc province, and 10 of 18 of the project’s overpasses are under construction. The site clearance work has nearly been completed, but the few cases that have not yet been resolved are affecting the construction’s progress.
