Seminar discusses Vietnamese businesses’ investment in Japan

The Foreign Investment Agency (FIA) under the Ministry of Planning and Investment and the Japan External Trade Organisation (JETRO) held a seminar themed ‘Expanding investment, business in the Japanese market’ in Hanoi on July 5 to direct businesses to access and invest in the Japanese market.

According to FIA Director General Do Nhat Hoang, Vietnamese businesses have invested in over 1,000 projects abroad with a total registered capital of US$9 billion, with nearly US$5 billion disbursed, mainly in agriculture, telecommunications and IT. They have poured approximately US$7 million in Japan in nearly 40 projects, ranking 45th among 68 countries and territories where Vietnam’s projects are running.

The FIA said that Vietnamese businesses have mainly invested in the IT sector in Japan, in which Vietnam has potential and Japan has a great demand, requiring small investments but bringing high added values, and helping engineers access and study advanced technology in Japan.

The agency commits to facilitate and encourage Vietnamese businesses to invest abroad. If they meet any difficulties related to legal supports and rights protection, they can get support from Vietnamese embassies and diplomatic representative offices in the host countries.

JETRO Vice Chairman Shigeki Maeda called on Vietnamese businesses to invest in Japan, particularly in the IT sector, saying that Japan’s running programme on training 10,000 software engineers for Asia is a good opportunity for Vietnamese businesses and engineers.

He said that the Japanese Government is trying to change and innovate to create favourable conditions for foreign businesses to invest in Japan, and JETRO has a centre providing market consultations and supporting administrative procedures for foreign investors.

In 2013, the Vietnamese Businesses’ Association in Japan was established to support Vietnamese businesses which had invested or intended to invest in the Asian country. Those which have been successful in investing in Japan’s IT sector can penetrate other potential market around the world.
