At a total cost of VND1,547 billion (US$68 million), the expansion is scheduled for completion in the fourth quarter of 2023.

Under the expansion project, the airport will be able to accommodate A320, A321 aircraft and the likes while the annual capacity of the terminal will be increased to 500,000 passengers.

In December, the ACV will select the contractor and begin construction work.

For the terminal, work is expected to commence in December 2022 and the airport is scheduled to be closed in March 2023 for the construction of the terminal and other parts of the airport.

ACV Deputy General Director Do Tat Binh said the total duration for the project’s implementation is estimated at 30 months, four months shorter than the original plan.

Dien Bien Airport currently has three parking slots and a 1,830-metre long runway, put into service in 1994, while its terminal can handle 300,000 passengers per year.

Due to the limited space, Dien Bien Airport can currently only serve ATR72 and similar airplanes during the day when weather conditions allow.
