Measures discussed to create foundation for agricultural development

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development (MARD) held a working session with the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers’ Association on August 16 to discuss the contents of cooperation between the two sides to promote the development of agriculture, farmers and rural areas.

Chairman of the Central Committee of the Vietnam Farmers’ Association Luong Quoc Doan proposed 12 activities that the two sides could collaborate on to support rural workers such as the development of One Commune One Product (OCOP) products, brand building and geographical indications, rural environmental protection, the supervision of the use of agricultural materials, the support of farmers’ start-ups, the promotion of links in agricultural product consumption, and digital transformation in agriculture, among others.

Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Le Minh Hoan emphasised the important role of farmers, enterprises and the MARD in the development of agriculture and rural areas.

He also highlighted the significance of understanding farmers and the use of simple terms in order to provide effective vocational training for farmers.

Minister Hoan also proposed six specific activities for the MARD and the Vietnam Farmers’ Association to jointly work on in the future including the mobilisation of farmers to participate in the collective economy.

“In the short term, we should mobilise farmers to join cooperatives to develop concentrated raw material areas and build value chains in 11 provinces and 75 districts according to the MARD’s project”, said Minister Le Minh Hoan.

The Minister also mentioned the necessity to mobilise farmers to participate in building identification codes for planting areas to serve in the traceability of origin of agricultural products and promote branding of products.

Training courses for farmers and fora on agriculture, farmers and rural development are also among the activities that the MARD and the Vietnam Farmers’ Association should conduct in the future, according to Minister Le Minh Hoan.
