Honda Vietnam, accounting for 70% of market share, was elected chairmanship of VAMM for the first term, from 2013 until the end of 2015. The other four producers are Yamaha Vietnam, Suzuki Vietnam, Piaggio Vietnam and SYM Vietnam.
The association represents the biggest motorcycle joint venture in Vietnam, with a total market share of over 95%, in which Honda takes the lead, followed by Yamaha with approximately 20%, and the remainder accounted for by SYM, Piaggio and Suzuki.
The establishment of VAMM aims to build a forum to connect motorcycle manufacturers in Vietnam, apply advanced technology in accordance with international standards to produce high-quality and environmentally friendly motorcycle products, and ensure a healthy competitive environment in the field.
VAMM also plays a role as a bridge between the motorcycle manufacturing businesses and the State, contributing suggestions to relevant authorities on the completion of institutional systems and policies related to the area, as well as helping motorcycle manufacturers in Vietnam get together and voice their opinions on orientations for the development of the motor industry in Vietnam.
Director General Masayuki Igaraghi of Honda Vietnam, who is also VAMA Chairman, said that the establishment of VAMM is a necessary development step for Vietnamese motorcycle manufacturers, contributing to the rapid growth of the motorcycle industry. This is particularly true in light of Vietnam’s fourth place position on the global list of motorcycle production after India, China and Indonesia.
According to the statistics, the total sales of the joint venture last year reached 2.8 million motorcycles. Honda overwhelmed the market share with 1.87 million vehicles sold in 2013; followed by Yamaha with 721,000; SYM with 500,000; Piaggio with 56,000; and Suzuki with over 50,000.
