The Government aims to build the Central Key Economic Region (CKER) into a centre of marine-based industries−including tourism and the petrochemical industry− according to a plan recently approved by Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung.

Under the socio-economic development plan for the CKER until 2020 with a view to 2030, growth in the region is expected at 8-9% per year with per capita GDP reaching US$3,600 in 2020.

The petrochemical industry will act as an important pillar of the CKER’s economy, helping to accelerate the pace of its economic structural shift and making the CKER a large petrochemical centre of Vietnam.

Quang Ngai province is currently home to Vietnam’s first ever oil refinery, the Dung Quat Refinery, in operation since 2009.

In addition to the oil industry, the CKER will also focus resources on shipbuilding and repair, port logistics, and marine transport services.

Taking full advantage of its resources, the CKER also aims to become a popular tourist destination, linking with tourism centres in the region such as Thailand, Singapore, Malaysia and Indonesia.

The region boasts a coastline with many beautiful beaches, whose appeal will be further broadened by a series of nearby cultural heritage sites namely the Hue monuments, Hoi An Ancient Town, and the My Son sanctuary of Cham relics.

The Central Key Economic Region is comprised of Da Nang city, Thua Thien-Hue, Quang Nam, Quang Ngai, and Binh Dinh provinces.
