Consumer prices in Hanoi down 0.23% in December

Hanoi’s consumer prices in December dropped by 0.23% from the previous month, thanks largely to reductions in transport costs, the municipal statistics agency has reported.

Over the past twelve months, prices increased by 1.55%—relatively low compared with previous years.

Consecutive cuts to petrol prices in recent months have helped bring down transport costs, which fell by 2.56% against November.

Building materials and utility services as a single group posted a one-month increase of 1.38% while education costs remained the same as in November.

In December, post and telecommunications costs posted the biggest gain at 0.68%, followed by the 0.54% increase in clothes and footwear.

The prices gold and US dollars, which are excluded from the basket to calculate the consumer price index, rose by 0.13% and 0.43% respectively.

The Hanoi statistics agency said in general, prices have been brought under control in 2014.

After posting big rises in the first two months of the year, month-on-month consumer prices have been in decline or rose at modest levels with the largest decrease recorded in November.

It is predicted that food prices will go up in the early months of 2015 with increased demand during the Lunar New Year holiday.
