NDO - Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged executives of the military-run Viettel Corporation to transform it into a leading telecommunications company in the region.

The Government leader made the request on March 11 during a visit to the corporation’s headquarters in Hanoi, where he praised Viettel as a pride of Vietnam and a confirmation of the sound policy of developing military-run enterprises.

He emphasised that Viettel must focus on its core businesses, including telecommunications, IT services and manufacturing telecom equipment and high-tech devices.

Viettel was also advised to strongly promote scientific and technological research to enhance the corporation’s competitiveness and the quality of its products and services, making it a leading corporation in the region.

The prime minister affirmed that the Government would create favourable conditions for the company to grow and fulfil its entrusted tasks while asking Viettel to ensure information security and develop web-based services, especially those related to information searches.

In 2014, Viettel posted revenues of VND197 trillion (US$9.3 billion), up 20% year on year and accounting for more than 10% of total revenues by State-owned enterprises. Its pre-tax profits in the same year were VND42 trillion (nearly US$2 billion), up 15% from a year earlier.

Viettel’s revenues from its overseas operations reached US$1.2 billion in 2014, up 25% against the previous year.

The corporation aims to raise its revenues and profits by 20% and 15% respectively in 2015 and become one of the ten largest telecoms companies in the world by 2020.
