Vietnam looks to boost agricultural co-operation with Japanese locality

Le Quoc Doanh, Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, and Yoshinobu Nisaka, the governor of Wakayama Prefecture in Japan, agreed to further promote agricultural and fisheries co-operation during their talks in Hanoi on March 11.

Addressing the event, Doan briefed the guest on Vietnam’s agricultural development potential and strengths, as well as the difficulties faced by the agricultural sector in restructuring to gradually improve the value and competitiveness of Vietnam’s agricultural products in both domestic and international markets.

He highly appreciated Japan’s support to Vietnam’s agricultural sector through the ODA projects, adding that Vietnam wishes to promote comprehensive co-operation with Japan as a whole and with Wakayama Prefecture in particular towards the shared goal of manufacturing agricultural and fisheries products with safe and efficient production procedures.

Vietnam wants to boost ties with Wakayama in applying technological advances to production, processing and distribution in fields of mutual concern, especially in developing human resources for the agricultural sector, and promoting trade of agricultural products, said Doanh.

Vietnam also encourages Japanese and Wakayama enterprises’ investment in plant and animal cultivation, processing of agro-forestry and fisheries products, and hi-tech agriculture, he said, asking the Japan side to continue sending qualified experts to help Vietnam’s coastal localities to improve fishing and preserving techniques aiming to add value to seafood products.

For his part, Nisaka spoke highly of Vietnam’s agricultural production potential and pledged to promote co-operation with Vietnam in its fields of strength such as fruit production and processing as well as ocean tuna fishing techniques.

The same day, Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Cao Duc Phat and Governor of Wakayama Prefecture Yoshinobu Nisaka signed a memorandum of co-operation in agriculture and fisheries.

Addressing the ceremony, Minister Phat affirmed that Vietnam wishes to further strengthen ties with Japan aiming to develop the two countries’ economies and tighten bilateral friendly relations. Vietnam always welcomes Japanese and Wakayama businesses to visit and explore co-operative opportunities in the fields of agriculture and fisheries.
