The company plans to buy another 20 tonnes from the Global GAP-certified lychee growing area in Luc Ngan district for export at 10% higher than the average price.

Last year, the company shipped two containers of lychees to the United States.

The early lychee harvest season has begun in Bac Giang with more than 1,500 domestic and foreign traders purchasing the fruit from local growers at nearly 3,000 sites across the province.

This year Bac Giang has about 6,000 hectares of early lychees with output estimated at 23,000 tonnes. A kilogram sells for at least VND13,000 (US$0.585) and can reach up to VND28,000 (US$1.26).

The early harvest season will end in mid-June before the main harvest begins.

In Hai Duong province’s Thanh Ha district, lychee growers have also begun the early harvest season with prices of up to VND26,000 (US$1.17) a kilogram.

The main harvest season is expected to arrive in less than three weeks.

The Thanh Ha Agricultural Processing and Export Company has secured contracts to export 500 tonnes of lychees to the Republic of Korea and the Middle East, as well as 100 tonnes to France.
