Fruit, vegetable exports hit US$3.34 billion by mid-December

NDO - Vietnam’s vegetables and fruits by mid-December continued to enjoy a rosy export growth, earning an estimated US$3.34 billion, up 45% from the same period last year.

Latest statistics from the General Department of Vietnam Customs showed the top four importers of Vietnamese goods were China, Japan, the US, and the Republic of Korea.

In the January-November period, Vietnam exported US$2.4 billion worth of fruit and vegetables, up 54.9% year on year, accounting for 75.7% of the total value of fruit and vegetables.

Markets are also seeing a sharp increase in imports of Vietnamese fruit and vegetables included Japan, 70%; Hong Kong (China), 67%; and the United Arab Emirates 54.7%.

Many kinds of Vietnam’s fruits and vegetables are now available in markets with a high demand.

The agricultural restructuring plan for 2017-2020 approved by the Prime Minister defined the national key products including products with export turnover of US$1 billion and over, as well as pork and poultry. Therefore, fruits and vegetables are the key export products of the country.

The Government will also promote mechanisms for the shift of infertile rice land into cultivation land for other types of plants, particularly vegetable production under high technology.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development set a target of increasing the total area of fruits in the country to 910,000 hectares, producing 9.5 million tonnes of fruits in the coming time.
