He said data concerning the economic performance will help the Government formulate development strategies for the country, each sector and locality.
The Government leader said he appreciated the efforts of statisticians to produce quarterly reports on Vietnam’s economic growth as well as the underlying reasons before such growth data.
But he also noted that the GDP calculation methodology needs improvement so as not to miss out informal economic activities.
PM Phuc urged the GSO to step up the application of information technology and international practices in statistical work and analyse in depth the global economic landscape and the market developments that could potentially affect Vietnam.
He emphasised that statistical data must be genuine, unbiased, accurate, timely and transparent.
According to GSO director Nguyen Bich Lam, the agency carried out nearly 30 censuses in 2017, including a general economic census to collect all the data on economic establishments throughout the country.
He added that in 2018 the GSO will provide growth scenarios promptly to help leaders at different levels and sectors in decision making and enhance the quality of macroeconomic analyses and forecasts.
