The products include specialties, processed food, medicinal herbs and handicrafts, among others.

Addressing the opening ceremony on January 24, Laos' Ambassador to Vietnam Thongsavanh Phomvihane said that the event is the first large-scale trade event introducing products from Lao businesses to Vietnam.

Lao companies consider Vietnam, and Ho Chi Minh City in particular, as an important market, and they hope that trade promotion and good exchange activities will be held more regularly in the future, he added.

The event will run until January 28, is expected to help to promote trade and bring Lao products closer to Vietnamese customers.

Trade between Laos and Vietnam topped US$900 million last year, a year-on-year increase of over 10 per cent. The two countries have set a target of US$ 4 billion by 2020.

Vietnamese companies have invested US$5 billion in 276 projects in Laos, mainly in energy, services, infrastructure, mining, agriculture and forestry.
