Can Tho to boost Japanese investment in 2018

Can Tho will hold various activities in 2018 in order to increase cooperation and attract further investment from Japan, particularly the organisation of a meeting between localities in the Mekong Delta region and Japanese firms on April 17-18.

According to the municipal People's Committee of Can Tho, the city will also organise events concerning their investment cooperation with Japan, including the construction of the ICT Innovation Centre developed by Japan's Brainworks Corporation; a trade and investment promotion conference in Japan's Hyogo prefecture; a meeting with Japanese enterprises in Hanoi; and a dialogue between the Can Tho authorities and enterprises related to Japan; among others.

There are currently six projects operated by Japanese firms in Can Tho with a total investment capital of over US$12 million, covering the areas of trade, services, production, and information technology.

Despite the modest size and capital of Japanese projects, as well as a lack of hi-tech projects, Can Tho has high expectations for the Japanese enterprises.

Deputy Director of Can Tho Department of Planning and Investment, Le Duong Cam Thuy said that the city sent two delegates to Japan last year and has connected with many localities in Japan in preparation for the next meeting in mid-April and the trade and investment promotion conference in August this year.

Thuy noted that the city has been working to clear about 30 ha of land to build infrastructure in order to attract Japanese investment.

In April this year, Can Tho also plans to commence the construction of three projects including a model farm project jointly developed by the Can Tho College for Economy and Technology and Japan's VAIO Company; the Vietnam-Japan Industrial Park project; and the Centre of Japanese Technology Innovation.

In addition, Can Tho has established a Japan Desk Office in the city in a bid to facilitate the attraction of new projects from Japan and Japanese enterprises that are operating in the city and the Mekong Delta region.
