The diplomat was speaking at a seminar on the Vietnam-Mexico relations, held on December 5 by the Vietnamese Embassy in Mexico and the International Studies Faculty of the Mexico Autonomous Institute of Technology (ITAM), discussing the outlook of cooperation between the two countries.

Addressing the event, Ambassador Duong said that since the two countries first set up their diplomatic relations 43 years ago, the bilateral relationship has grown strongly in all fields, such as politics, economics, trade, culture, education, healthcare and tourism.

Mexico is now the third largest trade partner of Vietnam in Latin America, while Vietnam is the eighth biggest market of Mexico in Asia.

He stated that the Vietnamese and Mexican economies can supplement each other, adding that the Comprehensive and Progressive Agreement for Trans-Pacific Partnership (CPTPP) will contribute to creating a favourable environment for the promotion of economic, trade and investment partnership between Vietnam and Mexico.

Through 40 years of national construction, from a war-torn country, Vietnam is now on the way to industrialisation and modernisation with a rising position in the world arena.

So far, the Southeast Asian nation has set up diplomatic relations with 180 countries and trade partnership with nearly 200 economies in the world, Duong said. Vietnam consistently pursues the foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, openness, diversification, multilateralisation and active international integration.

The ambassador affirmed that in the past two decades, Vietnam has made important contributions to the growth of ASEAN, adding that the country is working with the other members of the association to build the ASEAN Community Vision with the aim to foster intra-bloc connectivity through integration and dialogues.
