It is estimated that as of January 25, more than 24,000 containers had been piled up at Vietnam’s sea ports for more than 90 days.
The congestion was due to the fact that the agencies concerned failed to cooperate effectively, and even caused trouble for honest businesses, when implementing the policy of tightening the import of environmentally harmful scrap and waste.
The prolonged congestion has forced many businesses to suspend their operations or even close due to a shortage of the necessary scrap materials.
After the inspection tour, Chairman of the Government Office Mai Tien Dung urged the authorities concerned not to blame one another but to focus their efforts on dealing with the difficulties to quickly clear the eligible containers.
He stated that a report will be submitted to the Prime Minister and government with suggestions to revise the relevant decrees so that containers of scrap materials piled up at ports will be cleared as soon as possible.
At the same time, the Ministry of Finance is tasked with directing the customs to work with port operators and shipping lines to reduce the warehouse costs for enterprises.
For shipments of scrap materials claimed by no one or those containing only waste, Chairman Dung suggested that the government assign Hai Phong to dispose of the waste and reuse the scrap materials.
