The total amount includes 9.1 million TEUs of container throughput, a 3% increase over the same period in 2018.

The Vietnam Maritime Administration said that several ports witnessed the highest increases in volume of cargo throughput including Thanh Hoa, up 86% and Quang Nam, up 78%. Other ports in Ha Tinh and Binh Thuan provinces also saw increases from 58-62% year-on-year.

Meanwhile, Nha Trang and Can Tho ports posted decreases in volume of cleared cargo from 15-41% year-on-year.

In June alone, the volume of cargo moving through ports reached over 51.46 million tonnes, up 15% over the corresponding period last year, including 1.5 million TEUs of container, a year-on-year decrease of 4%.

According to the Vietnam Maritime Administration, the volume of cargo handled through ports in the first months of 2019 tended to increase slower than the same period in 2018.

Particularly, the volume of container throughput only went up by 3% in the six-month period due to the sharp decreases in container handled at several ports of My Tho (down 55%) and Quang Ninh (down 47%).
