The CPTPP, which took effect in Vietnam on January 14 this year, is expected to have comprehensive impacts on Vietnam’s society and economy, of which the agricultural sector faces both benefits and challenges from the agreement.
Addressing the event, Minister of Industry and Trade Tran Tuan Anh affirmed that FTAs, including the CPTPP and the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), open up opportunities for export and add value to farm products.
However, when tariff barriers are removed, the technical barriers become stricter, consequently posing significant challenges to the consumption and distribution of Vietnamese agricultural products.
According to Thao Xuan Sung, Chairman of the Vietnam Farmers' Association, under the impact of FTAs, the domestic agricultural market has been put under increasing competitive pressure due to the increase in the number of agricultural products imported from foreign countries.
At the seminar, managers, farmers and businesses focused their discussions on the current status and prospects of the Vietnamese agricultural sector after joining the CPTPP as well as on experience gained from foreign countries to fully reap the benefits of the agreement and mitigate the impacts of possible challenges.
