In August alone, seafood shipments brought home US$833 million.
Japan, the US, China and the Republic of Korea were the largest buyers of Vietnamese seafood in the January-July period, accounting for 56.5% of the total.
The strongest export growth was seen in the market of Taiwan (China), where Vietnam’s seafood revenues went up by 16.3%, followed by Mexico’s 14.6%, Malaysia’s 12.3% and Japan’s 10.4%.
Shrimps and catfish remained Vietnam’s main exports, with white leg shrimps and shark catfish accounting for 25.7% and 24.05% respectively.
Giant tiger prawn exports made up 8.15%, tuna 9.12%, other types of fishes 19.2%, and squids and octopuses 7.26%.
According to VASEP Secretary-General Truong Dinh Hoe, 31 Vietnamese seafood exporters will enjoy a zero tariff after the US Department of Commerce’s 13th administrative review, which is expected to boost Vietnamese seafood exports to the world’s largest economy.
He also predicted that Vietnam’s shrimp exports in the time ahead will pick up as the demand for shrimp usually accelerates in the final months of the year.
On the other side, Vietnam also imported US$1.19 billion worth of seafood in the first eight months of 2019, up 1.3% compared with the same period last year.
