Pig prices inch up in Vietnam’s southeast region

The price of pigs in southeastern provinces has increased by VND10,000 (US$0.43) per kilogram since the start of October as pig farmers in the region begin to rebuild their herds, the Voice of Vietnam reports.

In Dong Nai, Binh Duong and Binh Phuoc provinces, live pigs were sold at VND52,000 (US$2.236) per kilogram on October 7, up VND2,000 from the previous day.

According to the Dong Nai Animal Husbandry Association, despite an uptick in pig prices, there is not much supply due to low stock as a result of African swine fever, which forced 80% of pig farmers to stop raising the animal.

Currently a number of farmers have begun to rebuild their herds, leading to a rise in the price of piglets.

Deputy chairman of the association Nguyen Kim Dan said the price of piglets has increased to VND100,000 (US$4.3) per kilogram, compared to about VND50,000-60,000 about two months ago.
