Dung, who heads a committee on cooperative reform, was speaking at a meeting with the Vietnam Cooperative Alliance (VCA) on June 26.
According to VCA Chairman Nguyen Ngoc Bao, Vietnam saw the establishment of 752 new cooperatives, 10 cooperative alliances and 3,000 cooperative groups in the first six months of 2020 despite the negative impacts of the coronavirus outbreak.
As of June, there are 25,282 cooperatives throughout the country, with a total membership of 7.2 million and a job creation figure of 2.5 million.
The increase in the number of new cooperatives has been slower than expected due to the Covid-19, bird flu and African swine fever outbreaks as well as saltwater intrusion and climate change in the Mekong Delta.
At the meeting, the VCA brought forward a number of proposals to help cooperatives overcome current difficulties and accelerate their growth in future.
Deputy PM Trinh Dinh Dung affirmed that developing cooperatives is a consistent policy of the Party and State with the consistent introduction of various policies to support their rapid and sustainable development.
He noted that the collective economy remains small-sized and is facing numerous difficulties, therefore appropriate mechanisms and policies are needed to remove such difficulties and help them grow.
