According to Hung Yen’s statistical bureau, the provincial economy grew by 6.83% in the first half of 2020, primarily driven by industrial production and construction, which contributed nearly 75% to the overall growth.

Despite the impact of Covid-19, Hung Yen has recorded a relatively decent growth rate, with agriculture expanding by a steady 1.8% as most of its input materials and output are sourced and distributed respectively within the domestic market.

The African swine fever has been contained with 100% of communes having been declared disease-free with farmers quickly rebuilding their pig herds to take advantage of higher prices. Farmers are also restructuring their crops towards plants with a higher value, mainly fruit trees.

Industrial production grew by 8.93%, contributing 4.61 percentage points to overall growth, the main driver being manufacturing, which expanded by 8.76%.

Since the start of the year, Hung Yen has seen 530 newly established businesses, with a total capital of VND4,520 billion. To date, Hung Yen is home to 11,990 enterprises whose total registered capital is VND119,665 billion.

In 2020, Hung Yen has so far attracted 27 domestic and foreign projects, with pledges of VND1,200 billion and US$195 million respectively, raising the total number of projects to 1,939, including 480 foreign-invested projects, with capital totalling US$10 billion.

Hung Yen Party Secretary Do Tien Sy said that with strong determination, the province has achieved the dual goals of containing the Covid-19 outbreak and maintaining socio-economic growth, recording the second fastest growth rate in the Red River Delta and the fourth fastest nationally.

It is notable that the Prime Minister has approved adding three industrial parks in Hung Yen Province to the national industrial park development plan, raising the total area of industrial land in the province to 3,000 hectares. The transport infrastructure in Hung Yen Province has also been improved, laying the foundation to attract more foreign investment in the coming years.

Covid-19 remains a serious threat to the global economy and domestic socio-economic development. In the spirit of achieving socio-economic targets, the Hung Yen Party Committee has instructed authorities at all levels to effectively implement all measures set out to keep the coronavirus in check while promoting rapid economic development.

In the times ahead, Hung Yen will step up its implementation of various agricultural programmes, including restructuring animal husbandry and crop cultivation, promoting the private sector and cooperatives in agriculture, developing the supply system connecting with markets in the capital region, all with the near-term goal of helping farmers selling the local speciality of longan and other products. The province will also intensify the building of new rural areas so that Hung Yen will be recognised as a new rural province by 2020.

At the same time, Hung Yen will implement measures to support struggling businesses, attract investment to industrial parks, prepare the necessary conditions to welcome the relocation of foreign businesses to Vietnam, accelerate the progress of public investment projects, and enforce strict budget discipline, among others.
