The prices of shrimp in the Mekong Delta region, the largest shrimp farming hub in Vietnam, have increased again with good signs from export markets.

With the coming into effect of the EU-Vietnam Free Trade Agreement (EVFTA), shrimp farming provinces in the Mekong Delta region are also expecting a better export situation in the near future.

In Tra Vinh province, black tiger shrimp is purchased at VND180,000-VND200,000 per kg while white leg shrimpis sold at VND95,000-VND150,000 per kg, an increase ofVND20,000 per kg.

Nguyen Cong Danh, a farmer in Vinh Loc commune, Hong Dan district, Bac Lieu province said that the prices of white leg shrimp, tiger shrimp and giant freshwater shrimp have risen by 5-10%, making local farmers happy.

The price increase is thanks to the control of the COVID-19 pandemic, the reopening of a number of markets, and the recovery of shrimp exports. In particular, the effectiveness of the EVFTA and tariff advantages in the EU market have also contributed to stimulating the export market, raising the price of raw shrimp.

Ca Mau province, the leading shrimp export province in Vietnam, has enjoyed a 10% increase per month in shrimp export over the past three months.

Vietnamese shrimp has a competitive advantage compared with India and Ecuador because these countries have yet to control the pandemic so many partners do not wish to import goods from these countries. Meanwhile our country's shrimp products have built their brands and been selected by many countries around the world, making shrimp export turnover rapidly increase in recent months, said Duong Vu Nam, Deputy Director of Ca Mau Province’s Department of Industry and Trade.
