The Ministry of Industry and Trade said consumers will be able to buy the fruit on Shopee, Tiki, Sendo, Voso by Viettel Post and Postmart by VNPost starting from June.
Currently, such platforms are making preparations for transport and storage, and the lychees are expected to be widely available within the next few days.
After taking orders, the lychees will be delivered in refrigerated trucks or by air to ensure they will be of the best quality when reaching customers.
The sale of agricultural produce on digital platform is expected to be an effective way, in addition to conventional distribution methods, to help farmers expand the market for their produce to all Vietnamese provinces and cities.
The shopping platforms will work closely with the relevant agencies so that lychee vehicles will be properly disinfected to ensure the safety of consumers.
Sendo said it will walk farmers through on how to create livestreams using Facebook, TikTok and its own channel Senlive so as to promote their lychees effectively.
According to Sendo Chairman Nguyen Dac Viet Dung, the platform has achieved encouraging successes with programmes to bolster the sale of agricultural produce from Son La, Ben Tre and Hai Duong since the beginning of the year.
He added that the process is being fine-tuned after each programme to bring e-commerce to farmers in the most effective way, helping them proactively connect with potential customers.
For its part, Voso stated that lychees can be delivered to customers within 6-48 hours after harvest thanks to Viettel Post’s extensive distribution network.
VNPost said it will also work with market regulators across the country to support the sale of 3,000 tonnes of lychees through both online and direct methods.
According to the Bac Giang government, the province’s lychee output in 2021 is expected to reach 180,000 tonnes, with the main harvest season running from June 10 to July 20.
In the neighbouring province of Hai Duong, also a major lychee growing region, enterprises are purchasing the fruit with the goal of exporting 1,000 tonnes to Japan and another 4,000 tonnes to the US, the EU, Australia and Singapore.
It has also been estimated that the province’s lychee exports to China, Laos and Cambodia will reach 35-36,000 tonnes this year, up about 15,000 tonnes compared to 2020.
