12 additional national treasures recognised

Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has signed a decision recognising 12 artifacts and groups of artifacts as national treasures.

The Huu Chung bronze drum of the Dong Son civilisation (2,000-2,500 years ago), which is displayed at Hai Duong provincial Museum, was on the list.

The Thanh Mai bell, dating back to 798, was also recognised as a national treasure. The bell is exhibited at the Hanoi Museum.

The Khon Nguyen Chi Duc Chi Bi stele from the 15th century at the Lam Kinh historic site in Thanh Hoa Province and a Thuy Mon Temple stele from 1670, currently housed at the Lang Son Provincial Museum, were included on the list of national treasures.

A collection of 82 stone steles commemorating royal court doctors who passed the royal examination throughout the 15th to 18th centuries were also recognised as national treasures. The steles, found at Hanoi's Temple of Literature, made it on to UNESCO's list of world documentary heritage in 2010.

Some statues in Hanoi, dating from the 16th to 18th centuries, were included in the list of national treasures. The statues include the Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva (Thousand-Hand-Thousand-Eye) statue at the Da Xuyen Pagoda in Da Ton Commune, Gia Lam district; a set of three Buddhist statues – the Amitabha Buddha, Avalokitesvara Bodhisattva of compassion and mercy, and the Mahasthamaprapta Bodhisattva at the Thay Pagoda in Sai Son commune, Quoc Oai district and Buddhist statues of the Tay Son reign (1788-1802) at the Tay Phuong Pagoda in Thach Xa commune, Thach That district.

Additionally, other national treasures also included Linga with the Face of Shiva (Ekamukhalinga) from the 8th century and finely crafted railings from the 7th century. The Face of Shiva is housed by the My Son Sanctuary Management Board in Quang Nam province while the finely crafted railings are currently kept at the Nam Dinh Provincial Museum.

Two artifacts, displayed at Vietnam Military History Museum in Hanoi, were also recognised as national treasures. They include the MIG-21 jet fighter No 4324 – an artifact during the resistance war against the US aggressor; and the military strategic map entitled "Ho Chi Minh Campaign's Determination" – an artifact in the historical Ho Chi Minh Campaign.

Besides the 12 newly recognised treasures, 67 other objects have been awarded the title of "National Treasure" since 2012.
