Prof. Khieu, whose full name is Dang Vu Khieu, was born on September 16, 1916, in Hanh Thien Village, Xuan Hong District, in the northern province of Nam Dinh.
He devoted his life to conducting research on cultures, from the East to the West, from ancient to modern, and established himself as a noted and influential culture researcher.
He engaged in revolutionary activities before 1945 in various fields of Party work, mass mobilisation, army, and foreign affairs.
During the national resistance war against the French colonialists, he was assigned work in communication activities, and directly participated in the frontline of the Border Campaign in 1950 and the Dien Bien Phu Campaign in 1954.
He held many important positions including: Director of the Institute of Sociology, Deputy General Director of the Vietnam News Agency, and Deputy Head of the Vietnam Committee for Social Sciences. He was the first director of the Institute of Sociology, who laid the foundation for the development of sociology and aesthetics in Vietnam.
He is the author of hundreds of scientific research works on Marxism – Leninism, Ho Chi Minh’s ideology, as well as various topics about philosophy, culture, arts and society.
He was awarded many accolades from the Party and State, including the Ho Chi Minh award in 1996, the Labour Hero title in 2000, and the Independence Order, first class in 2006, among others, in recognition of his significant contributions to the nation's revolutionary cause and cultural development.
