NDO – A webinar themed ‘In her voice’ was held on October 19 to analyse and discuss the opportunities and challenges for female filmmakers in the film industry.

The event was organised by UNESCO in collaboration with Embassy of Canada and Embassy of Switzerland in Vietnam, with the companionship of Hanoi Grapevine and O Kia Hanoi Cultural and Creative Space.

It drew the participation of Vietnamese and international filmmakers including directors Thanh Van, Nhue Giang, and Nguyen Hoang Diep, film expert from the Korean Film Council (KOFIC) Yoonhyung Jeon, Canadian filmmaker Anne Koizumi, and Swiss director and screenwriter Petra Volpe.

The participants shared stories about their journeys to attend international film festivals, gaining access to cinema support funds, and priority prizes for female filmmakers.

Speakers also shared information and made in-depth discussions on solutions to address challenges and open opportunities for female filmmakers in Vietnam and around the world.

Addressing the event, UNESCO Representative to Vietnam Christian Manhart highly appreciated the crucial role, great bravery and resilient passion of women filmmakers despite the extra challenges they face in their career.

He expressed his hope that the webinar will be a great encouragement for female filmmakers as it was designed to showcase possible opportunities for their career development.

‘In her voice’ was held within the framework of the “E-MOTIONS project: Mobilising film professionals for regional cooperation” which is being conducted by UNESCO and cooperative partners, with the support from the Trust Fund of Japan. The project aims to enhance the capacity and empowerment of filmmakers as well as organise activities to connect domestic filmmakers with their peers in the region.
