NDO – ‘Chen thuoc doc’ (A Cup of Poison), a famous Vietnamese play composed by author Vu Dinh Long (1896-1960), has been translated into Russian by translator Igor Britov under a project hosted by the Institute of Oriental Studies and Ancient Civilisations under the Higher School of Economics – Russian National Research University.

The project aims to celebrate 100 years since the famous three-act play was first performed at the Hanoi Opera House (October 21, 1921), considered the starting point for stage drama in Vietnam.

Speaking at an online event held on October 23 by the Institute to introduce the Russian version of the play, Second Secretary of the Vietnamese Embassy in Russia Nguyen Anh Tuan highly lauded the efforts and achievements of the project team, stressing that the introduction of the literary works of Vietnam and Russia to the readers of the two countries is an indispensable part of bilateral cultural cooperation.

The great efforts made by the translators have provided readers more opportunities to learn about the literature of the two countries, thus increasing the mutual understanding between the two peoples.

For his part, translator Igor Britov said he was glad to complete the project and conveyed his thanks to his friends from Russia and Vietnam for their support during the project.

Delegates at the event reviewed the life, career and contributions of the late author Vu Dinh Long to the development of Vietnamese theatre as well as the achievements of Vietnamese drama over the past century.
