Co-organised by the Ministry of Information and Communication, the Department of Publishing, Printing and Issuing and the Vietnam Publishing Association, the event aims to promote a habit of recreational reading and book buying among the community through annual activities with the intention of building a learned society.

It will also contribute to strengthening the links between publishers and communications agencies and develop publication, printing and publishing activities to meet the requirements of readers in the context of international integration.

Addressing the opening ceremony, Deputy Minister of Information and Communications, Hoang Vinh Bao, said despite certain difficulties, the publishing sector has always organised activities to develop the reading movement in the community, and the 2018 Autumn Book Festival is just one example.

The ministry hopes that the festival, together with other book-related events, will form a series of regular cultural activities to promote a habit of regular reading among the people, thereby helping to develop a learned society, he added.

The annual event, running to August 26, offers the latest publications in a wide range of fields such as politics-law, economics, science-technology, education, literature, culture-society, and religion.

In addition, the event also includes many activities like exchanges between authors and readers, the introduction of new books, and entertainment activities encouraging a habit of reading.

On the occasion, the organising board will call on visitors to donate old books to children in Ta Gia Khau commune of Muong Khuong district in the northern mountainous province of Lao Cai.
