Ceremony honours contributions of great poet Nguyen Du

A ceremony was held in the central province of Ha Tinh on September 26 to celebrate the 255th birthday anniversary and 200th death anniversary of great poet Nguyen Du.

The event was attended by Politburo member, Secretary of Party Central Committee (PCC) and Head of the PCC’s Commission for Communications and Education Vo Van Thuong, among others.

The national great poet and world cultural celebrity Nguyen Du (born in 1765) made significant contributions to the country's literary treasure, especially with the masterpiece titled “Truyen Kieu” (The Tales of Kieu).

In 1965, the World Peace Council decided to celebrate 200th anniversary of Nguyen Du’s birth, along with eight other world cultural celebrities.

The UNESCO General Assembly honoured Vietnamese great poet and 107 other cultural celebrities of the humanity in 2013.

At the ceremony, a special art programme entitled “Nguyen Du – hundred years in the realm…” was held to reproduce the life and career of great poet Nguyen Du.

On the same day, Ha Tinh Provincial People's Committee, in collaboration with Vietnam Association of Kieu Studies and Nguyen (Tien Dien) family council, held a solemn ceremony to mark the 200th anniversary of Nguyen Du’s death.
