On the occasion of the National Action Month on Gender Equality and the Prevention of Violence Against Women and Girls, the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) in collaboration with the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MOCST) and the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra are organising the “Girls Deserve to Shine” symphony concert on Friday, November 27, from 8-10 pm at the Hanoi Opera House.
The event is an initiative between the Government of Vietnam and UNFPA to join hands to raise public awareness and increase the value of women and girls within the context of addressing domestic violence and gender-biased sex selection in Vietnam.
At a press briefing on November 17, Tran Tuyet Anh, Head of the MOCST’s Family Department, affirmed that the “Girls Deserve to Shine” concert conveys a message from the organisers to raise awareness within the community, family members and the whole society on the role and position of women, towards eliminating both gender stereotypes and domestic violence.
Tetsuji Honna, Maestro of the Vietnam National Symphony Orchestra, announced that the symphony concert will feature promising and outstanding young female soloists and will connect people, women and men, boys and girls from different socio-cultural backgrounds in different parts of Vietnam and the world.
Naomi Kitahara, UNFPA Representative in Vietnam, stressed that the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development has pledged to leave no one behind, with the SDG5 particularly important to “Achieving gender equality and empowering all women and girls” in all circumstances, meaning that across all development efforts, girls must be a priority.
It is with this purpose that the concert will be participated in by Vietnam’s young people, and it will also be livestreamed on internet live, so that can it can reach out to every part of Vietnam and the world, based on the cause “Girls deserve to shine,” the UN official affirmed.
