Vietnamese movie among top 10 most popular in the US

NDO – “Bo gia” (Dad! I'm Sorry), a Vietnamese comedy-drama film produced by celebrity Tran Thanh, was named among the Top 10 most favoured movies in the US market last weekend, according to the box office statistical unit Box Office Mojo, even though it was only premiered in 20 theatres.

Specifically, as of June 3, the movie collected US$350,000 in the first week of release, ranking 10th for top revenue, after blockbusters like "A Quiet Place Part 2" (US$47.5 million) or "Cruella" (US$21.4 million).

Producer Tran Thanh, who is a famous comedian, actor, and presenter in Vietnam and also a main cast member and co-director of the movie, shared that his film has hit other cities in the US, reaching 35 local theatres currently.

“Bo gia” was among the Top 10 most favoured movies in the US market last weekend.

The film was set for release on Lunar New Year on February 12, 2021, but was forced to be re-scheduled a month later due to the outbreak of COVID-19. The film premiered early on March 5 before officially hitting theatres a week later.

Although it is considered not to be among the top blockbusters in Vietnamese theatres, the film still set many box office records and currently has revenue of more than VND400 billion, according to the publisher's announcement, the highest revenue of all time, surpassing "Avengers: Endgame" at the Vietnamese box office.

Developed from a popular web drama of the same name, the movie is set in a poor working-class neighbourhood in Ho Chi Minh City, revolving around the family of Mr. Ba Sang (Tran Thanh) with generational conflicts between him and his son Quan (Tuan Tran) as well as other members in his family.
