Drawing inspiration from the spiritual history of the nearby Thay Pagoda, the 60-minute live spectacle tells the story of the pagoda founded by the venerable monk Tu Dao Hanh and the history of the ancient Thang Long royal palace.

Arranged on an interactive stage with the support of state-of-the-art technology and a stunning setting, the show features an array of traditional art forms and ritual practices from the northern delta, including Ca Tru (ceremonial singing), folklore melodies, Quan Ho (love duet singing), Hau Dong (mediumship ritual), and water puppetry.

Exhibition “Following in Footsteps: A Father and Son’s Journey through Art”

You are invited to the exhibition, “Following in Footsteps: A Father and Son’s Journey through Art”, a story of the lives and careers of two painters who are father and son, Luc Quoc Nhuong and Luc Quoc Sy. They represent a rare phenomenon within contemporary Vietnamese social contexts of a family’s continuation from generation to generation of an art practice that is “art for art’s sake”.

Cuci Art Studio will be introducing 56 oil paintings by Luc Quoc Nhuong and 18 lacquer paintings by Luc Quoc Sy.

“Long Lasting dreams” consists of 9 paintings on canvas – the latest works of Bui Quoc Khanh, created in 2019. The themes include social criticism, cultural, environmental, educational issues, and a visual language influenced by pop-art and graphic design, Bui Quoc Khanh’s paintings depict a vibrant space overflowed popular metaphorical images of from ancient times to the modern age, from the West to the East.

“In the City” is Doan Xuan Tung’s first solo exhibition, showcasing 12 works using acrylic and newspaper as a medium on canvas. The exhibition focuses on two main storylines: on the one hand, the daily life of city migrant workers, on the other hand, the lives of the emerging middle class – enjoying the utility of new residential areas.

A Night of Italian Music

The program begins with the Overture to Bellini’s opera Norma. Bellini was the master of the ‘bel canto’ (‘beautiful singing’) style, and Norma is generally considered his finest opera. It’s about a druid priestess who cannot urge her followers to rebel against the occupying Romans because she is having an affair with the leader of the Roman forces.

Then comes the Prelude to Verdi’s La Traviata. Verdi was Bellini’s successor and was destined to become Italy’s greatest opera composer. La Traviata is about the tragic love affair between the soprano, Violetta, and the tenor, Alfredo. Two duets from the opera follow.

After a famous intermezzo from Mascagni’s one-act opera Cavalleria Rusticana, we will hear three items from Verdi’s Nabucco (‘Nebuchadnezzar’). This opera is about the Bible story of the ancient Hebrews in exile.

The second part of the concert will feature music from famous Italian films such as “Life is Beautiful”, “The Mission”, “The Good, the Bad and the Ugly”, and “Cinema Paradiso”. This last is considered by many to be one of the greatest films ever made.

There will also be traditional Italian songs such as Santa Lucia, La Danza and O sole mio.

Two of the last items are arrangements by Roberto Fiore. And HBSO has succeeded in obtaining Fiore himself to conduct the whole program.
