Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc commemorated

Nhan Dan - A ceremony was held in Ho Chi Minh City on May 10 to commemorate the 49th anniversary of the death of late Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc who burned himself to death to protest the persecution of Buddhists under the Ngo Dinh Diem administration.

The ceremony was organised by the Vietnam Buddhist Sangha (VBS) and the VBS Chapter in Ho Chi Minh City.

Most Venerable Thich Quang Duc was born in 1897 in the central province of Khanh Hoa. On April 20, 1963 he immolated himself at the junction of Phan Dinh Phung and Le Van Duyet Streets in central Saigon to declare his protest against the persecution of Buddhists by the Ngo Dinh Diem administration.

Thich Tri Quang, Vice Chairman of the VBS Central Committee Executive Board and Head of the Ho Chi Minh City VBS Chapter Executive Board, and Vice Secretary of the VBS Central Committee Standing Board, Thich Duc Nghiep, attended the ceremony, along with numerous dignitaries, monks and nuns.

Participants also offered flowers to the monument for Bodhisattva Thich Quang Duc during the ceremony.
