Memorial services held for Vietnam’s UN peacekeeping officer who dies on duty

The Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations held a memorial service on January 19, for Lieutenant Colonel Do Anh, who laid down his life while performing a UN peacekeeping mission.

Included among the attendees at the funeral were, Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien, who is also head of the Ministry of National Defence's steering committee for the participation in UN peacekeeping operations; representatives of functional agencies and units under the Defence Ministry, officers and soldiers of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, representatives of United Nations agencies in Vietnam, diplomatic corps, international organisations and foreign military attachés in Hanoi.

Deputy Defence Minister Senior Lieutenant General Hoang Xuan Chien paid tribute to the late UN peacekeeping officer.

Representatives of functional agencies and units under the Defence Ministry conveyed their condolences to the family of Lieutenant Colonel Do Anh.

Group Captain Bea Walcot, the UK Defence Attaché to Vietnam, wrote in the condolence book in memory of Lieutenant Colonel Do Anh.

Do Anh was born in 1983 in the northern province of Nam Dinh and resided in Bac Tu Liem district, Hanoi. He was sent to the Central African Republic to work asa military observer, in 2021.

Major General Hoang Kim Phung, Director of the Vietnam Department of Peacekeeping Operations, delivered the eulogy at the funeral.

Major General Hoang Kim Phung expressed his deepest condolences over the passing of Lieutenant Colonel Do Anh.

With his dedication to the revolutionary cause of the Party, people, army and the UN peacekeeping mission, the Prime Minister signed Decision No.41/QD-TTg, recognising Do Anh as a martyr and awarding him with a certificate of national merit service. The Ministry of National Defence also posthumously promoted Do Anh from the rank of Major to Lieutenant Colonel.
