Hanoi’s ten most notable events in 2021

In 2021, the people and government of Hanoi made great efforts to realise the dual goal of containing the virus while promoting economic growth. Below are the ten notable events of the capital city over the past year.

1. Bringing Party’s resolutions to life

The Hanoi Party Committee issued a programme on enhancing Party building and stepping up administrative reform and other resolutions on developing capable officials to meet the tasks of a new period.

2. Successful organisation of the National Assembly election

The election of the National Assembly and People’s Councils, at all levels for the 2021-2026 tenure, in the capital city took place successfully in a democratic, safe and legal manner, with voter turnout reaching 99.16%.

3. Implementing dual goals of virus containment and economic growth

Hanoi took bold measures to curb the spread of COVID-19 and rolled out a large-scale vaccination campaign, with more than 11.7 million doses administered. Its economy also showed clear signs of recovery, growing by 6.69% in the fourth quarter.

4. Piloting urban government model

The organisation of a new urban government model in Hanoi, is designed to streamline the local government apparatus, suitable with the capital city’s urban characteristics. The pilot programme has recorded initial positive results.

5. Announcing plans for historical urban districts

Hanoi announced the detailed plans for the historical urban zone, covering the districts of Hoan Kiem, Ba Dinh, Dong Da and Hai Ba Trung, with an expected population of 672,000 in 2050. Hanoi also adopted a scheme to renovate dilapidated apartment buildings.

6. Education sector records high achievements

Hanoi students recorded impressive achievements at international Olympiads, with one gold medal in maths, two gold medals in physics and two gold medals in chemistry, as well as 139 prizes at the national contest for outstanding students in various subjects.

7. Major transport projects completed

In 2021, Hanoi inaugurated many important transport projects such as the Cat Linh-Ha Dong metro line, and the interchange between the 3rd Ring Road and the Hanoi-Hai Phong Expressway, helping to improve transport links and reduce traffic congestion.

8. All rural communes completed building new rural areas

By the end of 2021, all 382 rural communes in Hanoi have completed the task of building new rural areas, with 12 districts and towns recognised by the government, and another four districts awaiting official recognition.

9. Measures taken to improve social, cultural development

The capital city decided to focus its investments on healthcare, education and training as well promoting the value of local historical, cultural and revolutionary sites.

10. Political security and public security maintained

Hanoi continued to ensure absolute security and safety for political, cultural, social and international events, as well as the activities of Party and State leaders and foreign delegations in the capital city. The image of Hanoi as a peaceful, safe and friendly destination is increasingly promoted.
