Con Dao, dubbed “hell on earth”, was a now infamous prison established by the French and continued in use by the United States to cage Vietnamese patriots where thousands died following excruciating torture.

The memorial service took place at the Hang Duong Cemetery in the presence of former Vice President Truong My Hoa, former Con Dao prisoners, local authorities and residents.

The collection of political prisoners in Con Dao has been awarded the Hero of the People’s Armed Force title in recognition of their life-and-death struggle for national independence and reunification.

Trinh Van Lau, a former prisoner, said emotionally that this honour is dedicated to all those who laid down their lives in Con Dao.

During the memorial service, 21 torches representing 21 years of the American resistance war were lit and transferred to members of the Vietnam Youth Federation as a reminder of their forefathers’ valour and heroism.

Phan Van Mai, President of the Vietnam Youth Federation, expressed his profound emotions towards the spirit of Con Dao soldiers and took an oath on behalf of the Vietnamese youth to learn, live and be worthy of the sacrifice of previous generations.
