Activities nationwide mark 40 years of southern liberation, national reunification

Numerous activities took place across the country on April 25 to celebrate 40 years of southern liberation and national reunification (April 30,1975-2015).

In Ho Chi Minh City, the Ho Chi Minh City municipal Party Committee and Nhan Dan newspaper co-organised a special art programme themed ‘Songs of reunification’.

Speaking at the programme, Nhan Dan newspaper’s Editor-in-chief Thuan Huu highlighted the significance of the fight for independence, freedom and unification while expressing gratitude to contributors.

Revolutionary songs in the programme recalled glorious fights for independence as well as milestones in the development process of Ho Chi Minh City and the country.

On this occasion, the organising board presented twenty VND10 million savings books to Vietnamese heroic mothers, war veterans, wounded soldiers and revolutionary contributors’ families in Ho Chi Minh City.

Also in Ho Chi Minh City, 200 photos depicting the national war against American imperialism and the city’s achievements were displayed at a photo exhibition themed ‘Ho Chi Minh City – 40 years of Innovation, Development and Integration’.

The exhibition is open at the Youth Cultural House, Dong Khoi Road and Chi Lang Park to the public until May 2.

A memorial candle lighting ceremony also took place in the city to pay tribute to fallen soldiers.

In Hanoi, a meeting was held with 400 representatives of Vietnamese heroic mothers, heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, veterans, war volunteers and revolutionary contributors.

Secretary of the Hanoi municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi reviewed the nation’s heroic tradition and the capital’s contributions to southern liberation and national unification.

Undying memories and moving stories were retold by veterans and war-time volunteers who affirmed to continue their contributions to enriching the capital and the country.

On the same day, Nghi visited outstanding individuals and offered incense to the late General Secretary Le Duan and the late General Vo Nguyen Giap.

Meanwhile, an anniversary was held in the southern province of Tien Giang with the presence of National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan. Eight groups were presented with the title ‘Hero of People’s Armed Forces’ at the gathering.

Marking the 40th anniversary of southern liberation and national unification, Politburo member and President of the Vietnam Fatherland Front (VFF) Nguyen Thien Nhan granted reporters an interview on April 25.

He spoke highly of significant contributions of the South Vietnam National Front for Liberation to the national victory, which realised the Party’s revolutionary policies through gathering people from all regions of the country.

The official asked the VFF’s branches to listen to the voices and ideas of the people, especially overseas Vietnamese, and relay them to the Party and authorities while promoting the ideas through emulation movements to develop the country.

In the southern province of Hau Giang, a meeting with 100 families of revolutionary contributors was held. Provincial leaders presented gifts worth VND700,000 to the participants.

On the same day, workshops on the topic of 40 years of southern liberation and national unification were organised in Binh Duong province and Havana, Cuba.
