The gathering involved the city’s leaders, representatives of ministries and sectors, nearly 330 delegates who took part in the August Revolution of 1945, officers and soldiers who were imprisoned or captured by the enemy, and families of national contributors.

In his opening remarks, Politburo member and Secretary of the Hanoi Municipal Party Committee Pham Quang Nghi expressed his deep gratitude to war veterans, Vietnamese heroic mothers, war invalids and martyrs, and those who contributed to the national revolution, as well as to the construction and development of the country and the capital city in particular.

He recalled that on this day in history 70 years ago, under the leadership of the Party and President Ho, Hanoians rose together to stage a general uprising to escape from slavery and take authority.

The success of the uprising in Hanoi on August 19, 1945 strengthened the general uprising nationwide, he stressed.

Over seven decades since the victory, the city’s authorities and its citizens have exerted every effort to overcome difficulties and join hands with people nationwide to speed up the country’s Doi Moi (Renewal) process, he said, adding that the city has made comprehensive achievements in all fields, contributing to moving the country forward.

Delegates at the events had a chance to watch documentaries recounting the revolutionary spirit of the August Revolution 70 years ago, and listen to stories of historical witnesses who participated in the landmark event.

On behalf of Hanoi’s youth, Vu My Hanh, a student from the Foreign Trade University, extended her deep thanks to those who made enormous sacrifices for national independence and freedom.

She also reaffirmed that today’s younger generations would continue to develop the country and the capital.
