Q: Dear Mr. President, congratulations on being elected as the President of Vietnam! Could you please share your feelings with us on being elected as President?

A: Thank you to the press for your messages of congratulations. I would like to thank the deputies of the National Assembly for electing me in as President of Vietnam which is a new duty, a great honour and a tremendous responsibility. Valuable experience from former President Truong Tan Sang and other predecessors will be a great asset to me in fulfilling tasks assigned by the Party, National Assembly and the people of Vietnam.

I always bear in mind the wish of beloved Uncle Ho when he was elected as the first President of Vietnam, "I have only one desire, a most earnest desire which is to achieve complete independence for our country, complete freedom for our people, and to possess the necessary conditions for all of our countrymen to have access to adequate food, clothing and education". Under the leadership of the Party and the collaboration and assistance of the NA, NA deputies, the government, authorised agencies, the people, comrades and soldiers, I will do my utmost to fulfill all assigned tasks.

Q: As a State leader in the new development stage of the country, which area will you focus on in order to complete the tasks entrusted by the Party, NA and people?

A: The 12th National Party Congress has successfully wrapped up, affirming the determination of the Party, people and armed forces to continue to promote the Doi Moi process, firmly safeguard the country, maintain the peaceful environment and turn the nation into an industrialised country towards modernisation.

As a State head, representing Vietnam on internal and external relations who also chairs the Council for National Defence and Security and commands the people’s armed forces, I will make every effort to accomplish duties and responsibilities as stipulated by the Constitution and laws, all tasks assigned by the Party with the main focus to be given to the following:

Working closely with the NA, NA Standing Committee, the government and authorised agencies in performing tasks and rights in the field of legislative and executive reforms and in perfecting the legal system to institutionalise the 12th Party Resolution and 2013 Constitution.

Improving the efficiency of State management to meet the requirements of the socialist law-governed state in terms of developing a socialist-oriented market economy and international integration.

Building an elite and modern people's armed forces to firmly protect national independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity as well as maintain political stability and a peaceful environment for national development. Suggesting that the Politburo and the NA define the duties of the Commander of the people’s armed forces, and the organisation and operations of the Council for National Defence and Security, as stated by former President Truong Tan Sang at the ongoing 11th meeting of the 13th NA.

Implementing a consistent foreign policy of independence, self-reliance, peace, co-operation and development; proactive and active international integration; and ensuring a peaceful and stable environment while optimising external resources to develop the country and improve the living standards of the people.

Focusing on judicial reforms in order to ensure a democratic and strict judicial system and the protection of human rights and the socialist regime. Actively co-ordinating with the Vietnam Fatherland Front and its member organisations, to care for the people and protect the rights and legitimate interests of Overseas Vietnamese, while enhancing democracy and strengthening national unity.

Q: What message do you want to send to the Vietnamese people and Overseas Vietnamese communities?

A: I would like to send my best wishes to all Vietnamese people both at home and abroad. I hope that Vietnamese people all around the world will join hands in promoting patriotism, seizing opportunities and overcoming challenges to secure and build a prosperous Vietnam.

Thank you!
