The NA Vice Chairman and his delegation inspected the Dai Ngai Bridge project which facilitates the navigation of large vessels in the Hau River, the locality’s response to the impacts of climate change and rising sea levels as well as the building of new-style rural areas in Dong Hai commune, Duyen Hai district.

Working with provincial leaders the same day, he urged the locality to increase the application of science and technology, expand the large-scale rice field model, and increase connections in agricultural production.

The NA Vice Chairman also asked the province to enhance the construction of new rural areas to achieve the set targets, invest more in agricultural development and processing, and ensure social order, security and national defence.

At the same time, special attention should be paid to developing irrigation systems and coping with saline intrusion and rising sea levels, he noted.

Tra Vinh is among localities most vulnerable to rising sea levels and salt intrusion in Vietnam. If the sea level rises by one metre, about 45.7% of Tra Vinh’s land area will be flooded.

The coastal locality in the southeast of the Mekong Delta also relies mostly on agricultural and sea-based economic activities. It is still a low-income province with a large number of ethnic minority people.

The recent drought and saltwater intrusion have affected 29,067ha of rice in Tra Vinh, while 18,770 rural families still lack water for daily use.
