Central Military Commission works out tasks for 2017

NDO—The Central Military Commission (CMC) held a year-end meeting in Hanoi on November 30 to prepare a resolution on the implementation of military and defence tasks and the building of the Military Party Committee in 2017.

The event was attended by Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong, who is also secretary of the commission; President Tran Dai Quang, Politburo member and standing member of the CMC; Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, Politburo member and standing member of the CMC; and Gen. Ngo Xuan Lich, Politburo member, deputy secretary of the CMC and Defence Minister.

Addressing the meeting, General Secretary Trong noted that 2016 is the first year of the implementation of the resolution of the Twelfth National Party Congress and the resolution of the Tenth Congress of the Military Party Committee.

Despite difficulties, the CMC focused on leading and directing the fulfillment of its envisaged tasks, notably including consulting the Party and State in performing military and national defence missions, proactively updating and predicting situations and dealing with incidents in a timely fashion, and strengthening and improving the efficiency of national defence diplomacy, the Party chief said.

He added that the CMC directed the army to promote its focal role in safeguarding the nation’s independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, building a people-based defence force, preventing and combatting natural disasters, exercising rescue work and overcoming the consequences of past wars.

With regards to the plans and tasks for 2017, General Secretary Trong requested that the CMC and the Defence Ministry direct the enhancement of the quality of grasping the situations, provide timely consultation to the Party and State in terms of military and national defence tasks and successfully handle the circumstances, contributing to firmly defending the nation’s independence, sovereignty, unity and territorial integrity, as well as to protecting the Party, State, people and the socialist régime.

The CMC and the Defence Ministry will continue to direct international integration, enhance the efficiency of foreign affairs in national defence, build strategic trust and contribute to improving the position of the army and implementing the Party and State’s foreign policy well, he said.

Strengthening the power and combat readiness of the army and furthering the leadership and combative strength of the Military Party Committee are also among the CMC’s key tasks for next year, the Party chief noted.
