The conference was jointly organised by the Vietnamese NA in coordination with the Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in Da Nang on December 17-18.

The NA Chairwoman emphasised that, over the past 15 years of implementing the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, the Vietnamese NA promulgated the 2013 Constitution in addition to building and amending more than 300 laws and ordinances.

The NA also participated in formulating and adopting national strategies, promulgating resolutions and supervising the materialisation of the sustainable development goals.

"Sustainable development goals are both a target and an opportunity for lawmakers to realise their commitments to improving the lives of the people and protecting the planet on which we live", the NA Chairwoman said. She also emphasised the significant role of the National Assembly, National Assembly deputies and deputies of the People's Councils at all levels, in improving the legal framework and supervising the implementation and allocation of funds for the implementation of sustainable development goals.

IPU General Secretary Martin Chungong spoke highly of the efforts made by the Vietnamese NA in implementing the sustainable development goals, emphasising that Vietnam is the first country in the Asia-Pacific region to hold a conference on this issue.

Martin Chungong expressed his belief that, with the coordination of the NA, Vietnam will achieve more results in the future to create a better life for the people, which is also a very important responsibility for parliaments.

The conference will focus discussions on the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the role of parliament, the introduction of Self-Assessment Toolkit for Parliaments and sustainable development goals. The event is expected to put forth solutions and recommendations for Vietnam to address challenges in the implementation of sustainable development goals.
